TFB Yearly Football Recap 2025 Edition

From rewinding your music playlists, shopping and ordering summary from various apps, it is time to rewind the top moments from the sport you passionately love. This year has been a riveting roller coaster of emotions for many teams. From PSG winning a treble to Liverpool ending City’s domination and many more.

Football seasons are usually remembered by trophies and tables. But when you look back, it’s the moments that define a year. One free-kick, one late winner, one night when everything shifted. From January to December, Europe’s top five leagues delivered flashes of brilliance that stopped time and changed narratives. Here is a compilation of the top footballing moments from 2025-

January

  • Neymarmakes his emotional return to Santos FC. The atmosphere in Vila Belmiro was electric as the “Prodigal Son” played his first match back in Brazil, immediately providing two assists. The player’s move was very emotional to his fans after his tenure at Al-Hilal and was keen to return to the big stage.

  • Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 5-2 to win Supercopa de Espana after being a goal down in the opening 5 minutes. Raphinha scored a brace and Barcelona won comfortably despite a red card.

February

  • Mohamed Salah scored a goal in the Liverpool-Man City clash, becoming the first Premier League player to score and assist in both matches against the reigning champions in a single season.

  • Real Betis’ spirited 2-1 upset win over Real Madrid in La Liga, climbing to sixth place through effective counterattacks and personality against a faltering giant. Isco scored against his former club and Barcelona extended their lead at the top.

March

  • Newcastle Unitedwins the Carabao Cup, ending a 70-year trophy drought. The scenes at St. James’ Park upon the team’s return were legendary. They defeated the inform Liverpool side 2-1 with Isak scoring the decisive goal.

  • Declan Rice’s 2 spectacular free kicks from long range against Real Madrid in the UCL quarter finals extended Arsenal’s unbeaten run against the Galacticos.

  • Erling Haalandbreaks the record for the fastest player to reach 100 Premier League goals, hitting the milestone in April against Everton.
  • PSG secured the 13th Ligue 1 title with 6 matches to spare after beating Angers 1-0. It was the start of a historic treble winning era for the team too.

  • Barcelona defeated Real Madrid for the 4th time in the season to win the Copa Del Rey. Jules Kounde scored the extra time winner to secure the title.

May

  • Liverpool clinched the premier league title with a comfortable 10 points margin over Arsenal. This was Arne Slot 1st season as a Liverpool manager and he became the 5th ever to do so joining the likes of Carlo Ancelloti, Antonio Conte, Jose Mourinho and Manuel Pellegrini. Meanwhile, Arsenal finished 2nd for 3rd season in a row but fans have faith and trust in Mikel Arteta’s process.

  • Napoli clinched their 2nd Serie A title after edging out arch rivals Inter Milan by defeating Cagliari 2-0. It was one of the most dramatic Serie A this year as Juventus and Atalanta were in tight contention for quite long this season.

  • Santiago Montiel scored an incredible goalfor Independiente against Independiente Rivadavia in the Argentinian league. This goal won the Puskas Award later this year. He scored a long range overhead kick after Independiente won a corner but was partially cleared. Montiel was outside the penalty box and he timed his jump perfectly to score the goal. The goalkeeper stood like a mere spectator.
  • Bayern Munich continued their domestic domination by comfortably winning the Bundesliga. Harry Kane was again the top scorer of the league. This was the 1st ever major trophy in Harry Kane’s career.

  • Crystal Palace defeated Manchester City to win the FA cup ending their FA cup trophy drought after 34 years. Eze scored the only goal of the game.

  • Inter Milan defeated Barcelona in the UCL semifinal. This was arguably one of the best games of the year with the balance shifting every 10 minutes. From Raphinha normal time’s last minute goal which gave Barca the lead but Acerbi equalised in injury time and Fratessi’s winning goal in the added time gave Inter a hard fought 4-3 victory over the Laliga Winners.
  • Barcelona won the Laliga and also completed a domestic treble. This was Hansi Flick’s 1st season and with the heavily criticised high line tactics, he answered all the critics with a bang.
  • Tottenham Hotspur ended their 17 year trophy drought after defeating Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League Finals. Brennan Johnson scored the only goal and confirmed their UCL spot for the next season.

June

  • PSG comprehensively defeated Inter Milan 5-0 in the UCL finals and completed their 1st ever historic treble. This was PSG’s 1st ever UCL title and Luis Enrique became 2nd ever manager after Pep Guardiola to win 2nd treble and that too with different teams.

  • Kylian Mbappe outscored Viktor Gyokeres to win Europe’s golden boot. This was his 1st ever Golden boot after having a prolific debut season at Real Madrid. He scored 42 goals in 55 games for the club.
  • Xabi Alonso officially joined Real Madrid as the head coach after Carlo Ancelloti stepped foot in a new phase of his managerial career after signing with the Brazil National Team.

  • In a shocking development, Tottenham fired Ange Postecoglou despite winning UEFA Europa League and ending a 17 year trophy drought.
  • The inaugural FIFA Club World Cup started with 32 teams participating in the USA.

July

  • Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal defeated Spain to win their 2nd ever UEFA Nations League. What was speculated to be a battle between the young prodigy Lamine Yamal and experienced Ronaldo’s talent, it was Ronaldo big time match experience which became a factor as he was also in the scoresheet for Portugal.

  • PSG defeated Real Madrid 4-0 in the club World Cup. Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha continued their rich forms from the last season.
  • Chelsea outwitted tournament favourites and European Champions PSG 3-0 to win the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup.

August

  • Crystal Palace defeated Liverpool 3-2 to win the community shield. Mohammed Salah missed the decisive penalty.
  • PSG defeated Tottenham 4-3 on penalties to win the UEFA super cup. Mathys Tel and Micky Van de Ven missed the penalties.

September

  • The Summer transfer window officially ended. Liverpool became the top spender by spending £446m. They purchased some big guns like Frimpong, Wirtz, Isak, Ekitike, Kirkez, etc.
  • Ousmane Dembele and Aitana Bonmati won the prestigious Balon D’or awards. Dembele won a historic treble with PSG and played a key role there. Lamine Yamal won the Kopa trophy for the 2nd time and finished 2nd in the Balon D’or.

  • Eric Ten Hag was sacked by Bayer Leverkusen after two Bundesliga games and three total competitive games in charge, setting a new record for the fewest league matches in charge before being dismissed in Germany.

October

  • Portugal wins the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar, showcasing a terrifyingly talented next generation.

November

  • Tensions grew within the Liverpool camp as expensive signings like Florian Wirtz and Isak failed to make a significant impact. Liverpool’s poor form continued after suffering many defeats in both the Premier League and UCL. Salah was reserved on bench for a few games and hence he questioned his future with Liverpool.
  • Lionel Messi became the all-time leader in football assists on November 30, 2025, providing his 405th career assist for Inter Miami in a playoff win, surpassing Ferenc Puskás (404) for the most recorded assists in history.
  • Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets end their illustrious careers after winning the MLS Cup with Inter Miami.

December

  • Lionel Messi visited India as part of the G.O.A.T India Tour. He visited Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Delhi.
  • The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)kicks off in Morocco with Senegal and Algeria making massive opening statements with 3–0 wins.
  • Kylian Mbappe equalled Cristiano Ronaldo’s tally by becoming the all time Real Madrid scorer by scoring 59 goals in a single calendar year. It was his 2nd ever season at Real Madrid and the future looks bright.
