Barcelona midfielder Gavi’s knee injury has turned out to be more serious than initially expected, forcing the 21-year-old to undergo surgery on Tuesday, September 23, 2025. The radial meniscus injury in his right knee did not improve with conservative treatment.
The first team player Pablo Martín Páez Gavira (Gavi) underwent intense sporting stress tests after finishing his conservation course of treatment for the radial injury to the internal meniscus in his right knee.

Earlier, Gavi had opted for non-surgical treatment, with Barcelona coach Hansi Flick expressing optimism last week: “We hope to have him back soon.” However, reports emerged yesterday that recovery had not gone as planned, leading to the decision for an arthroscopic procedure, which will be performed by Dr. Joan Carles Monllau under the supervision of the club’s medical staff.
This setback is particularly concerning, as it affects the same knee where Gavi suffered a major ACL tear in November 2023, which sidelined him for nearly a year. Despite the surgery, Barcelona hopes he could return to action in 4 to 6 weeks, potentially in late October or early November.
Gavi’s absence adds to Barcelona’s injury concerns, with midfielder Fermín López also sidelined for three weeks due to a muscle injury. As the team faces upcoming fixtures against Real Oviedo, Real Sociedad, PSG, and Sevilla, Barcelona will have to manage without two key midfielders.

The club has not specified an official recovery timeline, but media reports suggest Gavi could be out for five to six weeks. A follow-up statement is expected after the surgery to provide more updates on his condition.
