As a Barcelona fan, I was thrilled for the UEFA Champions League showdown between Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.
The match had it all -Luis Enrique’s seasoned strategy, and Xavi Hernández’s management, tactics, goals, etc.
The Hype and the Doubt

The media had been heavily critical of Xavi’s appointment, claiming he wasn’t ready for such a big job. But this game was the perfect opportunity for him and his Barcelona side to silence the doubters.
The first leg at Parc des Princes was a challenge, yet I believed in Barcelona’s ability to secure a good outcome.

Right from the start, Barcelona’s strategy was evident and flawlessly executed. Xavi’s choice to play Sergi Roberto was brilliant, offering the ideal balance of attack & defense in midfield.
Araujo, Koundé, and Cancelo formed an impenetrable backline, effectively neutralizing Mbappé. Their disciplined and focused play consistently disrupted his supply and denied him room to maneuver.
Barcelona’s defense masterfully contained Mbappé, a top threat in global football. Mbappe was completely surprised by this defensive organization.
Lewandowski’s Masterclass and Raphinha’s Brilliance

Going forward, Barcelona were also creating some promising opportunities. Robert Lewandowski, the talismanic Polish striker, was dropping deep and linking the play superbly. His hold-up play, first touch, and ability to bring his teammates into the game were a joy to watch.
If only the finishing had been a little sharper, Barcelona could have gone into the break with a healthy lead.
One player who caught my eye in the first half was Raphinha. Often criticized for not being the most eye-pleasing player, he more than made up for it with his work rate, intelligence, and threat in the final third.
His pressing, willingness to chase down lost causes and intelligent positioning caused PSG all sorts of problems.
The Second Half Fightback

Luis Enrique, true to his reputation, made ideal substitutions and tactical shifts with Barcola at the second half’s onset. So, Barcelona faced a dire start to the half as PSG quickly scored twice, seizing the lead.
It was a gut punch for the Blaugrana, but this is where Xavi’s tactical acumen and in-game management came in.

The timing of his changes was spot on, with each substitution making a tangible impact on the flow of the game. Bringing on Christensen to shore up the defense, introducing the energy and directness of Féli. Xavi managed young Lamine Yamal with a maturity that went beyond his years as a head coach.
The Barcelona legend delivered a masterclass in tactics and leadership. His ability to guide the team to success was evident it also showcased the deep respect and trust he has fostered among them.

Luis Enrique, the veteran, will have a few more tricks up his sleeve to try and get the better of his former protégé, Xavi.
